Underwood's Fine Jewelers was founded in 1957 by Bill Underwood on Dickson Street near the beautiful University of Arkansas campus. In 1961, Bill opened the very first accredited Gem Lab certified by the American Gem Society (AGS) in Arkansas. In 1966 the world renowned architect, Fay Jones, designed the current Underwood Building which has been the location of Underwoods since the building was completed. Two years later, in 1968, Bill Underwood was appointed to the Diamond Standards Committee of the U.S. and Canada. During the 1970's, Underwood's grew in size and stature as Bill Underwood was selected by the Smithsonian Institute as one of 33 jewelers in America to create a special jewelry piece for the Smithsonian Collection, as well as, perform an ironclad appraisal on Elvis Presley's ring he designed for his "comeback" tour. The 1980's saw a family addition to the store as Craig Underwood completed his gemological training and began his career and earned his Certified Gemologist title. Underwood's also won a world design competition held in Tokyo, Japan for custom designed pearl cufflinks out of a field of 1,000 entries from 46 countries. During the 1990's,Underwood's was named the best Single-Store Jeweler in American; inducted into the National Jeweler Hall of Fame; won the National AGTA Spectrum Award which is the industry's most coveted design competition; Craig earned his Certified Gemologist Appraiser title and Craig was appointed Chairman of the Diamond Standards Committee for North America. During the 2000's, Underwood's won numerous awards and honors such as the International Platinum Honors Award which Underwood's is the first and only jeweler in Arkansas to receive this award;jeweler for the Emmy Awards; named the "Best jewelry Store in America" by Instore magazine and dubbed "Coolest Store in the U.S."; winner of the CASE Awards TWO TIMES (2012 and 2014) by Jewelers of America for jewelry design; provided custom jewelry to be worn at the Oscars; and named by Town and Country Magazine as the Leading Independent Jeweler in the USA. Bill and Craig have both served and been honored in the industry. They have both served as Presidents of the American Gem Society. Bill was awarded the "Triple - O" Award for outstanding achievement in the jewelry profession, the American Gem Society's Shipley Award for the highest ethics in the industry and Entrepreneur of the Year by the Sam Walton School of Business at the University of Arkansas.
